Freestyle At The World Finals
In 2008 the first ever Red Bull Street Style World Freestyle Soccer Finals was held in Sao Paulo. The event was a massive success and Arnaud "Séan" Garnier from France was declared the eventual winner, beating Yosuke from Japan. Judges included the legendary former Tottenham player Edgar Davids, 1994 World Cup champion Bebeto and 2008 FIFA World Futsal Player of the Year Falcão, plus legendary New York breakdancer Crazy Legs.Forty five countries from all around the world particpated in the competition. Each country had its winners of their respective National Finals representing them in the World Finals in Brazil, the spiritual home of traditional soccer.
Séan stunned the audience by combining his skillful ball tricks with breakdance moves in a truly unique urban style. In the final he turned it on for the crowd and won over the judges by sticking a pen in his mouth gripped by his teeth, then rolled the ball continously on the pen’s tip. This was an innovative idea and had not been seen before. The crowd roared in appreciation.
"I love football, and winning a championship in Brazil is really special," said Séan. "Yosuke was great, but I knew that if I did my very best I had a shot at winning". In the semifinals his opponent Brazilian Murilo Pitol was honest of his rival’s superiority: "I just made too many mistakes against Séan, and he was able to pull off tricks that were more difficult than mine."
Edgar Davids summed up the historic night in one sentence: "I had never seen anything like this," the Dutchman admitted. "Brazil truly is a land of football passion, so there was no better choice to host this first World Championship. And what we saw here tonight confirmed that." The world finalists made their way through 138 qualification tournaments in 44 countries judged by the criteria technical skill, ball control, and creativity to the music.
